Students and staff at both Rainy River High School and Atikokan High School received great news at the Rainy River District School Board’s regular meeting last Tuesday night in Rainy River.
The board approved, in principle, spending $1.5 million on renovations for the two schools.
Of that, RRHS will receive about half the funds.
“The exact scope of the project will be determined once an architect is selected, and a renovation committee will be formed to review and prioritize the needs of the school,” noted board spokeswoman Darlene Madill.
Some areas being looked at include barrier-free washrooms, ceiling renewal, lighting renewal, door renewal, locker renewals, and possible staff room upgrades.
The board also passed a trustee honoraria policy at last Tuesday’s meeting.
The base amount for a trustee is $5,900 per year, with the chair receiving an extra $5,000 and the vice-chair an extra $2,500.
The student trustee receives $2,500 per year, prorated for less than term.
Jeff Marchuk of RRHS was sworn in last Tuesday as student trustee for the 2014-15 school year.
