Two new fires were confirmed between Sept. 28 and Oct. 1 in the Northwest Region.
Dryden Fire #29, located 30 km southwest of Vermilion Bay, was listed as “being held” at 1.5 hectares in size.
Meanwhile, Dryden Fire #30, located near Crabclaw Lake, was “under control” at 0.2 hectares at last report.
The forest fire hazard is “moderate-high” across the region.
In related news, the Basket Lake Ragged Wood prescribed burn has been underway since Sept. 29.
So far, 1,811 hectares of the total 3,296-hectare project size has been ignited around four prescribed burn areas (Savant, Ragged Wood, Webfoot, and Silver Dollar).
Ignition was scheduled to continue until late this afternoon (Oct. 2) to complete the two remaining prescribed burn areas.
The goals of this prescribed burn are to remove residual slash piles, create more planting sites for trees, and reduce the forest fire hazard in the Sioux Lookout and Dryden Districts.
The ignition operations are contained to the slash piles and no problems are anticipated.
Smoke drift may be experienced in the immediate area of the burn but concentrations will be low.
