There currently are two active fires in the region.
Red Lake Fire #69 is located about 80 km northeast of Red Lake.
The 0.1-hectare blaze was listed as “being observed.”
Sioux Lookout Fire #68, meanwhile, is a 0.1-ha blaze, also listed as “being observed,” about 50 km southeast of Cat Lake.
In other news, the MNR successfully conducted two prescribed burns late last week.
The prescribed burn at Horse Lake in Sioux Lookout District was ignited Friday morning in an area of weather-damaged forest about 35 km northeast of Sioux Lookout.
Incoming rain stopped further ignition, but an aerial survey showed roughly 50 hectares had burned—reducing coarse fuels and eliminating fine fuels.
The fire continued to smoulder through the weekend, but no further spread is expected.
Fire managers will reassess the conditions on the site this week to see if it comes back into prescription for further ignition.
This forested area had been selected for prescribed burning as it’s been heavily-damaged by weather events.
This forest renewal will help to establish caribou habitat.
The MNR also did a prescribed burn on two islands on Lake of the Woods in the Kenora District, which were ignited on Thursday.
FireRanger crews monitored both islands after ignition and the fires were contained to the islands with no issues.
