There are two active fires in the Northwest Region—one in Red Lake District and the other in Nipigon District.
Both were human-caused, and there are no problems anticipated with these fires.
Nipigon Fire #6, located about 20 km southeast of Nipigon, is burning along the CPR rail line in grass and some poplar trees.
It currently was classed as “not under control” at 0.5 ha in size.
Red Lake Fire #2, meanwhile, is located in Pikangikum.
It is burning in a slash pile, and being fought by the community fire officer with a community fire truck and a backhoe to rip apart the pile.
It was classed as “under control” at 0.1 ha in size.
The weather is improving in the Northwest Region following several days of rain and cloud.
This change is causing a rise in the forest fire hazard, and this increase in hazard is expected to continue through the weekend.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds the public that no brush or grass fires are allowed during the day from April 1-Oct. 31.
These fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset and must be put out no later than two hours after sunrise, and must be at least two metres from any flammable materials.
All fires must be tended by a responsible person until put out. Adequate tools or water also must be available to put the fire out.
