Elgin–Middlesex–London MP Karen Vecchio says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to call for a federal Liberal leadership convention to select a new leader before he officially leaves office on March 24 is too little, too late for struggling Canadians.
“Justin Trudeau should have called a general federal election and given Canadians the opportunity to go to the polls and vote on the leadership and Prime Minister of Canada,” MP Vecchio said in a statement. “Canadians deserve a choice in the leadership of our country.
“As Member of Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London, I continuously hear from constituents on their concerns with the Canadian economy, immigration system, cost of living, increase in crime, and other national concerns,” added MP Vecchio, the region’s Conservative Party of Canada member.
“Canada needs a federal election (and) today the Prime Minister should have given Canadians the opportunity to cast a ballot for the direction of our country.”
Prime Minister Trudeau announced on Jan. 6 that he will prorogue, or suspend, Parliament until after his successor is chosen on March 24.
“Justin Trudeau’s resignation changes nothing,” said Andrew Lawton, who became as this region’s Conservative nominee on Nov. 10, 2024 for the next federal election. MP Vecchio announced July 30 that she will not seek re-election after 10 years in office.
“All his (Prime Minister Trudeau’s) potential successors stood by his side when he opened our borders, hiked our taxes, and doubled our debt,” added Mr. Lawton. “Don’t be fooled by whatever they claim to pretend they’ve turned a page.”
