Residents of the unincorporated geographic townships of Dewart and Sifton here in Rainy River District will become part of the Township of Morley, Municipal Affairs and Housing minister Chris Hodgson announced Monday.
The restructuring proposal was developed locally. Morley council adopted the proposal Nov. 13 before submitting it to Hodgson.
The proposal also was supported by residents of the unincorporated areas to be annexed.
Residents currently receive contracted road maintenance and fire protection services from Morley, and use its waste management facility.
“I congratulate the Township of Morley and the residents of Dewart and Sifton for working together to provide more effective local government in this area,” Hodgson said.
The new municipality, to be called the Corporation of the Township of Morley, will come into being on Jan. 1, 2004. It will have a population of nearly 600.
