THUNDER BAY – The summer send-off drone light show will return to Live at the Waterfront.

The City of Thunder Bay is partnering with Thunder Bay Airport to provide an end-of-summer drone show

The city is asking residents for their input on what they would like to see over Lake Superior at the end of August.

“We’re currently asking members of the public to provide their creative, family-friendly ideas, which will be reviewed through a jury process,” Talia Strickland, the city’s special event developer, told Newswatch in an interview.

Strickland said community members submit their creative ideas through the city’s Get Involved survey. Submission will be accepted until May 31.

“So, it could be Thunder Bay landmarks, nature, outdoor things, anything that members of the public might think embodies Thunder Bay,” she said.

Last year’s drone show featured images of a turtle, the Sleeping Giant, a hawk, Kakabeka Falls, a walking moose, and a wolf.

This year, Strickland said, city staff want to keep the theme broad to not limit the creative process.

She also said people’s ideas do not have to stay within the city limits. An image from the surrounding area will also be accepted.

An estimated 10,000 people attended the two-day event last year.

However, this year, Strickland said the city is hosting one event at the waterfront on Aug. 27.

“We think it’s a great way to wrap up the summer, and it’s really nice to have this working partnership with the Thunder Bay Airport to be able to put on an amazing show for everyone to see,” Strickland said.
