In an attempt to help airlines manage rising jet fuel costs, the Thunder Bay International Airport Authority will temporarily reduce select airport user fees from May 1 to 30.

Graham Ingham, airport president and chief executive officer, said the move comes amid increasing fuel prices and tightening supply, placing additional pressure on airlines. The user fees that will be reduced are the airport’s security infrastructure fee and its common use fee and are intended to support reliable air service and preserve essential connectivity for Thunder Bay and Northern Ontario.

“With fuel costs continuing to place pressure on airline operations, this temporary fee relief helps reduce the overall cost of serving Thunder Bay,” he said.

“By lowering these local fees, we’re supporting airlines in maintaining reliable service and preserving essential connectivity for Northern Ontario communities.”

Ingham said the decision was based on the current operating environment, including ongoing flight cancellations and sustained fuel cost pressures facing airlines.

“By targeting the month of May, we’re providing timely, short-term relief to support service stability and help our airline partners navigate these challenges,” he said.

He added that the fee reductions will be applied automatically to scheduled commercial flights operating through Thunder Bay International Airport during the month of May.
