Students watch safety video

Students at Huffman School here were treated to a special screening of a safety video for children on Monday.
The “Smart Kids” video was provided to more than 3,700 elementary schools across Ontario this fall.
The video is divided into four sections dealing with home smarts, school smarts, street smarts, and Internet smarts.
Students from senior kindergarten to Grade 3 watched the segment on school smarts, which talked about bullying and how to deal with it.
“Paws” the talking dog, who is featured in the video, encouraged kids who are victims of bullying to tell an adult, like a teacher or parent.
The video explained that bullying is not limited to physical abuse, but also can be verbal through taunting and gossip.
The video was provided free by the Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP).
Representative Robin MacDonald was on hand Monday to talk to the kids, along with Sharon Preston of the local Ontario Elementary Teachers’ Federation and Dan Maltais of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association.
“This video is to help you—when the time comes—to make a good decision instead of a bad one,” Maltais told the children.
MacDonald thanked the school boards and teachers unions that supported the video, which was produced in 2001 by Global Television in conjunction with the RCMP.
