Students’ online safety in spotlight

the OPP

As part of Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week, the OPP continues to offer school-based lessons to students across the district with financial support of Tim Hortons’ “Smile Cookies” fundraising campaign.
As part of our ongoing efforts to increase awareness of responsible digital citizenship, OPP Community Services Officer Anne McCoy routinely attends schools to deliver online safety messages using materials from Common Sense Media.
The scope and sequence include lesson plans for students from kindergarten-Grade 12, as well as parent/community workshops.
The trusted materials are well-rounded and help police ensure there are resources for the entire community, including students, parents, and educators within the community.
The OPP continues a partnership with the Rainy River District School Board to educate school staff and students in delivering messaging of responsible online use.
The lessons meet core standards for school boards, and help teachers and police deliver consistent messages together or independently.
Cst. McCoy today spoke to the Grade 7 and 8 students at Robert Moore School here focusing on “Safe Online Talk.”
The lessons included critical thinking activities, videos, and assessments.
The lessons engage parents as students take home Parent Tips Sheets to enable caregivers to continue the conversation at home with their children.
The objectives of this particular lesson included:
•describing positive aspects of online talking and messaging;
•identifying situations in which flirting and chatting become inappropriate and risky; and
•understanding the rules for safe online messaging, and feeling empowered to deal with uncomfortable situations when communicating online.
