THUNDER BAY — Two exhibitions at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery featuring student artwork from Lakehead University’s visual arts department are highlighting the vibrant and growing art scene in the city.
“For the gallery, what you see is really a cross-section of creativity and what’s interesting and the creative pulse. You see these young creative minds thinking through what’s happening around them in visual culture and mainstream culture and exploring different ideas,” Matthew Hills, executive director of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, told Newswatch.
The Juried Student Exhibition represents an opportunity for students to present their work in a professional setting. The exhibition features submissions hand-picked by a panel of Lakehead University judges. Only a select number are chosen, showcasing some of the strongest work on display.
Alongside it, the Honours Exhibition shines a spotlight on graduating students presenting their final projects to the public. For many, this exhibit marks a major milestone towards their degree.
“There’s always different themes and different connective threads that reach through these exhibitions, so it’s super interesting as a viewer, as the public, as the gallery to go in there and see what young artists are thinking about – the ways that they’re viewing society, the ways that they’re viewing things that we’re all thinking about, but from their perspective of both creativity, exploration and critique, so it’s really always an interesting, exciting show,” Hills said.
The juried show will be available for public eyes until April 5, with the honours show running until April 12.
Hills said those interested can find more information online, and admission will be free for this coming Family Art Sunday at the gallery.
