Stratton resident Riet Carnahan is among 20 individuals, groups, and businesses who will be receiving a 1999 Ontario Volunteer Award later this month in Sioux Lookout.
Carnahan, nominated for the award by Barb Duguay, co-ordinator of the Emo and Rural Home Support and Emo Meals on Wheels, has been an active senior volunteer in both of these programs for more than five years.
“I was really surprised when I got the letter saying I was going to receive the award,” Carnahan said Monday, noting she has never been honoured in such a way before.
“Riet is a beyond-the-call-of-duty type of volunteer,” noted Duguay. “She has also done a lot of palliative care duty.”
The award will be presented May 19 at the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre in Sioux Lookout in a ceremony hosted by Marilyn Mushinski, parliamentary assistant to Premier Mike Harris.
The Ontario Volunteer Awards were developed as a way for the provincial government to recognize and thank volunteers for their commitment and dedication.
Since 1984, these awards have recognized continuous years of voluntary service given by individuals to a group. Adults have been honoured for five, 10, 15, 20, or 25 consecutive years of volunteer work, and youth volunteers (24 years and under) for two or more consecutive years.
Beginning in 1999, an additional category of service will honour volunteers who have contributed 30 or more years of continuous service to a single group.
