At last Thursday’s public meeting of those opposing the abattoir in Emo, it was suggested the old Stratton Meats abattoir could be resurrected instead.
Drew Stajkowski, senior environmental officer with the MoE in Kenora, was contacted and asked about this possibility.
“As far as we are concerned, this is a cinder block building,” Stajkowski noted. “The facility has no lagoons, and the last certificate of approval was issued in 1978 and would not meet today’s standards.
“That site has been looked at by another party already, and he did apply for an approval and it was returned to him because it didn’t have the technical information in order to approve it,” Stajkowski added.
“Subsequent to that, we haven’t heard anything more from him. I understand that it might be cost prohibitive, but I don’t know the reasons.
“That site would need all the same approvals that any other facility of that nature would have to have,” Stajkowski stressed. “It would need sewage works, water supply, and waste management.
“These are the main concerns and the reason that [the abattoir committee] is looking at Emo,” Stajkowski continued. “So they can avoid stand-alone systems.”
