Standoff ends peacefully

A 29-year-old Northwest Bay resident faces several charges following a stabbing and standoff there yesterday.
Darryl Sakchekapo was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, assault on a peace officer, uttering threats, and failing to comply with a probation order, police said.
He has been remanded into custody and will appear in court again March 31, police added.
The incident began yesterday around 10:30 a.m. when a member of the First Nations Police Service, assisted by officers from the OPP, arrived to investigate an assault incident that had taken place at Northwest Bay earlier that morning.
A female victim had sustained non-life threatening injuries to her leg as result of being stabbed with a knife. She was taken by ambulance to La Verendrye hospital here for treatment.
Police encountered a male suspect armed with a knife outside of his residence. Officers negotiated with the individual until he entered his residence shortly after noon.
During that time, the OPP’s Emergency Response Team and canine unit were activated. The suspect remained in his residence until about 4:15 p.m., at which time he emerged from the residence and surrendered to police.
No other injuries were reported.
