The “Spirit of Christmas” is making a comeback.
The very popular fundraiser, last held here in 2008, is scheduled to take place on the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 25 at La Place Rendez-Vous.
Linda Hamilton, who was part of the “Spirit of Christmas” organizing committee since its inception in 1995, said people were asking to bring the fundraiser back.
As well, the “Spirit of Christmas,” in conjunction with the Rainy River District Breast Health Network, has made a commitment of $10,000 towards a new digital mammography unit here.
“We just sort of disbanded completely, got rid of our lists, did all that, and we’re starting fresh,” Hamilton explained.
“It will be the same format, but hopefully we’ll draw old and new people—and hopefully new crafty things.
“The idea is put it back together this year specifically for the mammography machine at the hospital,” she added.
Hamilton now wants to get out word that the silent auction event is happening and organizers are looking for donations of items.
“We’re encouraging baskets, gift exchange items, things that are maybe usable year-round,” she said, stressing items don’t have to be Christmas-oriented.
In the past, items have ranged from crafts, decorations, and artwork to gift certificates and food items.
“As usual, we’ll have great baking, tea and coffee,” noted Hamilton.

As noted, all of the proceeds will go toward the new digital mammography unit at La Verendrye Hospital for the benefit of all district residents.
While fundraising for the equipment is ongoing as of press time, with the “Together We Can” campaign expected to wrap next month, some of that has been in the form of pledges, such as the $10,000 made by the “Spirit of Christmas” and the local Breast Health Network.
The “Spirit of Christmas” had been a popular local fundraiser over the years, with proceeds shared between the local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society and the Fort Frances Community Chest.
