Six to vie for Emo Fair queen crown

There are six contestants competing in this year’s Emo Fair queen pageant, which once again is being held in conjunction with the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society’s annual fall fair in August.
Organizers Sis and Trisha Wilson, who took over the event last year, are thrilled with the boost in participation this time round.
“We had four girls last year. It’s great to have a few more,” Sis Wilson said, noting they had a few girls interested before they even began making phone calls to fill the spaces.
This year’s contestants are Brittany Roen of Barwick, Bridgette Maki of Emo, Rebecca Mosbeck of Barwick, Sairah Chabot of Devlin, Chelsea Bragg of Barwick, and Raylene Smith of Emo.
“They’re just getting started making their banners,” noted Wilson, stressing they have a busy summer ahead of them.
Both Sis and Trisha Wilson were Emo Fair queens in 2002 and 2004, respectively, so they know exactly what needs to be done.
The contest, open to girls aged 15-18 who live in Rainy River District, is not the typical beauty pageant as seen on television. Rather, it focuses more on community involvement and attitude.
And the contestants’ work continues right up until the crowning on Aug. 16.
They sell buttons, ride in the July 1 parade, put on a fashion show and entertainment night, and help out at many other functions.
The girls also are judged on a one-on-one interview and their float for the Emo Fair parade.
But this year they’ll have an added task.
In the days following the crowning, the new queen, along with her first and second princesses, will prepare to host the mini-king and queen pageant held in the afternoon of Aug. 18 at the fairgrounds.
“They’ll do the commentary for the show,” Wilson explained. “It’ll get them a little more involved in the fair.”
And she added plans for the event are coming along well.
“We’re doing pretty well. We know what to expect this year,” she said, noting Mary Croswell and Debbie Carlson have also been a big help when it comes to planning and organizing.
Profiles on the six contestants will be available in the near future.
