Six new fires over weekend

Despite storm activity, only six new fires were reported in the West Fire Region over the weekend.
Five of those occurred in the Nipigon District, with the other one reported in Thunder Bay District.
All the new fires were contained to less than one hectare.
Excellent co-operation between the Ministry of Natural Resources and various municipal fire departments was reported this weekend as most of the new fires occurred in populated areas, prompting multi-agency responses.
The public is reminded that a restricted fire zone remains in effect in the Lake Despair area, about 30 km northwest of Fort Frances.
All outdoor fires are prohibited within the restricted fire zone boundary. This will reduce the risk of a major forest fire burning in extensive stands of dead jack pine trees, which were killed by budworm infestations between 2005 and 2007.
Portable gas and propane stoves can be used for cooking, but must be handled with extra care.
The MNR also is reminding the pubic that under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, day burning of brush or grass is not allowed.
People may start a fire no sooner than two hours before sunset and they must put it out no later than two hours after sunrise.
Choosing a safe site, keeping the fire small and never leaving it unattended, and ensuring the fire is dead out before leaving the site all are safe burning guidelines.
People living in a municipality should check local bylaws for any burning restrictions that may apply.
