SIOUX NARROWS–NESTOR FALLS — Some important community area upgrades are underway in the townships of Sioux Narrows–Nestor Falls and Alberton.
Bass Lake Park in Sioux Narrows–Nestor Falls is undergoing a number of changes, including a brand-new playground and a one-kilometre trail connector from the Red Pine Trail to the park and beach.
“The idea was to build an additional trail connecting them so that trail users can have access to a washroom, they can have access to the beach, to the picnic area, to the playground, it just makes it more of a recreation destination,” said Chief Administrative Officer Heather Gropp.
The trail connector has recently been completed, and residents can expect the new playground equipment this fall.
“The playground has been in use for many, many years, and it’s time for a refresh, so there will be a larger playground installed, more modern,” Gropp said. The sand base will also be replaced with a more accessible surface.
The picnic shelter is in need of some love, Gropp said, and they are considering expanding the beach, which is currently small. Gropp said they want it to “absolutely shine.”
“We are seeing a growing population; we’re seeing increased visitation to the community and it’s really important that our residents and our community have these spaces that allow us to enjoy the water and get out and get exercise,” she added.
The township secured $375,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund for the park improvements, announced last week by Kenora–Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford last week.
Rickford also announced $180,000 through the NOHFC for a 600-square-foot expansion to the community’s 50+ Activity Centre to support their many programs, for which construction has already been completed.
Gropp said the centre is quite busy with things like their community garden, art workshops, physical activities and guest speakers.
“They do really great work in the community, and so it’s great to see that these services are being expanded,” she said.
Another community park set to receive a makeover is Alberton’s Millennium Park, a year-round gathering spot that will soon have an accessible ramp from the parking lot to the skating rink area, new washrooms and more inclusive playground activities.
“This project will have a significant impact helping to ensure that everyone, regardless of (their) age or ability, can access all areas of the park,” said CAO Lisa Sheppard.
The ramp will lead to what is the skating rink and shack in the winter and the event gathering area in the summer. Another improvement includes a sensory activity panel at the playground for children who enjoy tactile play.
“When you create these environments, it enhances community well-being and wellness and physical activity. And that just strengthens community resilience,” added Sheppard.
The park project is receiving $177,959 through the NOHFC, also announced by Rickford last week.
