One new lightning-caused fire was confirmed Saturday evening in the Northwest Region.
Red Lake Fire #13, located about 40 km northeast of Red Lake in the Coli Lake area, was extinguished as of this morning.
Several other fires also were declared “out” over the weekend, including one in Quetico Provincial Park that was being monitored since May 23.
There currently are seven active fires in the region, including one in Kenora District, five in Red Lake District, and one in Thunder Bay District.
One blaze did require air attack support yesterday.
Red Lake Fire #10 is a 650-hectare, lightning-caused fire located about 70 km northwest of Red Lake in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.
FireRanger crews are establishing hose lines around the perimeter of this fire.
Since April 1, there have been 127 fires in the region, burning 2,753.6 ha in all.
Provincially, the total number of fires is 191, with an area burned of 2,874 ha.
At this time last year, there had been 58 fires and 96 hectares charred.
The 10-year average is 246 and 9,913, respectively.
The forest fire hazard is “high” in the west and
northwest sectors of the region, “moderate” in the central and northeast sectors, and “low” in the southeast.
Meanwhile, Ontario continues to support Alberta and Yukon firefighting efforts.
Currently, there are 143 personnel in Alberta, along with pumps and hose equipment from Ontario, and 74 personnel in Yukon.
