The Kenora OPP Marine Unit is still searching for a missing person on Red Deer Lake, north of Kenora, after a first person was found dead in the water Tuesday morning.
“We just finished the ground search last night,” Sgt. Larry McInnis said this morning.
“Any time you have an accident like this, and there’s a person missing, there’s always a chance they made it to shore,” he noted. “In this accident, that wasn’t the case.”
Sgt. McInnis noted the OPP underwater search and recovery unit was on its way from Gravenhurst and slated to arrive around noon.
The mishap that sparked the search took place Monday when a camp owner found a boat floating on the lake which belonged to his neighbour.
A search of the area where the boat was found proved negative.
Kenora OPP then were notified and a search was started Tuesday morning. Police found the body of Hugh Hamilton of Winnipeg in the water around 7:15 a.m.
The body was removed from the lake and sent to Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora for a post-mortem examination.
Police haven’t yet received the results so Sgt. McInnis couldn’t confirm whether Hamilton’s death was due to drowning.
Police did not reveal the identity of the missing person.
An investigation into the mishap also is ongoing, police noted.
