Second arrest has been made in mail theft case

(FORT FRANCES, ON) – The Rainy River District Detachment Crime Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid multiple charges in mail theft investigation reported December 4, 2024.

On January 22, 2024, shortly after 10:00 a.m., members from the Rainy River District Crime Unit have arrested and charged a second individual in connection with the reported mail theft. As a result of the investigation, a 59-year-old LaVallee man has been charged with: Possession of article stolen from mail; and Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 – in Canada.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on February 26, 2024.

The spouse of the man – a 56-year-old LaVallee woman – had been previously charged with: theft from mail sent by post, possession of article stolen from mail, theft over $5000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, and careless storage of a firearm. She is scheduled to appear in court January 29.

DEATH INVESTIGATION

(SHOAL LAKE 39 FIRST NATION) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), in partnership with the Treaty Three Police Service (T3PS), is investigating a death in Shoal Lake 39 First Nation.

On January 17, 2024, members of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), Forensic Identification Services, Regional Support Team, and Major Case Investigation Team engaged to assist T3PS with an investigation where an individual was located on a roadway and was later pronounced deceased.

The deceased has been identified as William Prince, 18-years-old, of Shoal Lake 39 First Nation.

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted under the direction of CIB, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. A post-mortem examination will be conducted at the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto to determine the cause of death.

There is no threat to public safety.

IMPAIRED DRIVER

(SIOUX NARROWS-NESTOR FALLS, ON) – One individual is facing impaired charges following a traffic complaint.

On January 20, 2024, just before 1:30 p.m., members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 71 in Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Township. Officers subsequently located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle had been impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Kenora OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result, a 39-years-old Morson man, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with: Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs and Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus).

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on February 8, 2024.

STUNT DRIVER

(ATIKOKAN,ON) – On January 20, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m., members of the Rainy River District Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Atikokan Detachment were conducting radar enforcement on Highway 11 in the Atikokan Township where a vehicle was observed travelling at 142 Kilometers per hour. Rainy River District OPP members conducted a traffic stop on the subject motor vehicle.

Through investigation, an 84-year-old of Atikokan, Ontario, has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed.

The accused received a 30-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused received a Part III Summons and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Atikokan at a later date.

IMPAIRED DRIVING

(ATIKOKAN, ON) – Members of the Rainy River District Atikokan Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged one individual with impaired operation.

On January 18, 2024, at approximately 3:00 p.m., members of the Rainy River District Atikokan OPP detachment responded to a traffic complaint of a suspected impaired driver. Officers located the motor vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on Highway 11 east of Perch Lake Road in the Rainy River District.

Through further investigation, it was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle had been impaired by alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and transported back to the Atikokan detachment for further testing.

As a result, a 54-year-old Fort Frances woman, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with: Adult Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs and Adult Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus).

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Atikokan on February 22, 2023.

DRUG CHARGES

(RED LAKE, ON) – One individual is facing numerous charges following a stolen motorized snow vehicle (MSV) in the Municipality of Red Lake.

On January 22, 2024, just after 7:00 a.m., members of the Red Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an address on Pine Crescent in Red Lake following the theft of an MSV.

A short time later, the accused was located on Highway 105 near Young Street and was subsequently placed under arrest.

Through investigation, it was determined that the individual had been impaired by drug. Additionally, officers seized a number of suspected illicit substances including cocaine, crack cocaine, and fentanyl. Items associated with drug trafficking were also seized.

As a result, a 33-year-old, of Timmins, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and Motorized Snow Vehicle Act with: Theft Over $5,000 of a Motor Vehicle; Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs; Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine; Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Cocaine; Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Opioid; Operation While Prohibited and Drive Motorized Snow Vehicle While Licence Suspended.

The accused has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Red Lake at a later date.
