It’s almost back-to-school time again and with that in mind, the local Xi Tau chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority made a special donation to the Atikokan Crisis Centre this week.
The chapter donated 10 backpacks full of school supplies to the crisis centre for the children of women who are seeking refuge there from domestic violence.
Xi Tau member Susan Sieders said they often give to the crisis centre at Christmas time, but wanted to give more—particularly new items.
“It’s nice for them to have new stuff, too,” she noted.
The brand-new backpacks contain pencils, crayons, sidewalk chalk, glue sticks, stickers, rulers, playdough, erasers, exercise books, and some small toys.
Some were packed with primary children in mind and others for junior students.
“The kids in the shelter are going to be so excited,” said Donna Kroocmo, executive director of the Atikokan Crisis Centre.
“We’re always looking for school supplies for kids,” noted Sandra Brouwer of the crisis centre. “And the women appreciate knowing that other people are thinking about them when they’re going through such a difficult time.”
Sieders and fellow Xi Tau members Karen Egan and Michaela Jensen met here Thursday with Brouwer and Phyllis Angus to deliver the backpacks.
