School board ratifies CUPE deal

The Rainy River District School Board, along with Local #65 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, jointly ratified a proposed four-year agreement, which is in effect from Sept. 1, 2004 until Aug. 31, 2008.
The board approved this contract at a special meeting last Wednesday (Dec. 21).
“Discussion centered on several key issues which were worked through in an atmosphere of mutual trust and accommodation, resulting in a fair and equitable agreement,” said board chair Ron McAlister.
The local membership voted to ratify this four-year agreement, which is within the government guidelines for support staff.
The contract includes a salary increase of two percent as of Sept. 1, 2004, two percent as of Sept. 1, 2005, 2.5 percent as of Sept. 1, 2006, and three percent as of Sept. 1, 2007.
The contract also included improvements to clarify secretarial classifications.
“Maintenance, caretakers, secretaries, and clerical staff provide integral support to our schools,” said Laura Mills, the board’s superintendent of business.
“Administration looks forward to the continued partnership with CUPE in support of student success,” she added.
