School board gets new co-ordinator

As of Jan. 8, the Rainy River District School Board not only has the new position of communications and transportation co-ordinator filled, but is seeing a new face to the area, too.
And Darlene Ferniuk, who brings with her 12 years of media advertising experience with Manitoba Telecom Services, and holds a degree in Management and Administration from the University of Manitoba, is ready for her role.
“You’re really wearing two hats,” said Ferniuk. “The transportation side has been a pre-existing job here. So, for me, it’s about learning the systems that are in place and making little adjustments when needed.”
But as communications co-ordinator, Ferniuk also is responsible for communication plans and material for internal and external constituents, media relations systems, promotion of board positions and policies in the media, and Web site development.
Ferniuk described her job as “everything from internal memos to crisis communication should there be an emergency.” But one immediate priority is to work on the board’s Web site–www.rrdsb.com.
“I think they’re looking at making it more interactive. I’m hoping to incorporate some ‘flash’ into the graphics, give the site a more creative look and feel,” she noted.
Ferniuk moved to Fort Frances from Winnipeg only a few weeks ago to be with fiancé Brock Madill but she already is settling in.
“I love it. We bought two new snowmachines when I got here, and that’s a top priority for me now. You can practically take off out your door,” she remarked.
“I really enjoy outdoor activities. I don’t think I’ll have any problems missing home.”
