Whether or not the rule curves for Rainy and Namakan lakes will be changed or retained will be the focus of a series of public meetings this week.
There will be six meetings, two in each country, this evening through Thursday, with all of them starting at 7 p.m.
Tonight’s meetings will be held at the Rainy River Recreation Centre and Kabetogama Lake Community Centre.
Tomorrow night’s meetings will be held at the Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre (Rainy River First Nations) and Rainy River Community College in International Falls.
The meetings conclude Thursday at the Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation roundhouse and Crane Lake Chapel in Crane Lake, Mn.
The rule curves used to regulate the minimum and maximum water levels on Rainy and Namakan lakes have been under review since last August.
The International Joint Commission study board has been gathering information and public feedback regarding a possible adjustment to the current rule curves, which first were established in 2000.
At this week’s meetings, the study board will present some preliminary findings and ask the public if there’s anything else it should be incorporating into the review.
It also will provide plenty of time for questions and comments.
