The Student Leaders in Development program at Rainy River High School will be saluted by the public school board at its regular meeting there tonight.
The group consists of 22 students from Grades 10-12, with a goal of fostering “a connection to the school and a sense of self and value within the greater school community for all students.”
It is the umbrella group to all of the organizations, clubs, activities, and opportunities that occur within RRHS.
“Current student leaders are mentors to new incoming members,” noted a report to the board.
“Overall, the goal is to have all students, during their four years at Rainy River High School, participate in at least one leadership opportunity,” it added.
The Student Leaders in Development program is a work in progress, and they expect it to evolve as the priorities of the program align with other school initiatives.
“Throughout the year, feedback through surveys and other data gathered will help the student leaders decide the next steps and direction of the program,” the report said.
Also at tonight’s meeting, the board will:
•see new student trustee Jeff Marchuk of RRHS take has oath of office;
•hear a presentation about the recent EQAO results;
•vote to grant authority to borrow up to a maximum indebtedness at any one time of $3 million, on the authorized signing officers of the board, to meet current operating costs for 2014-15 pending the receipt of grants and/or funds from local revenue;
•vote to approve, in principle, the spending of $1.5 million on renovations to Atikokan High School and Rainy River High School; and
•look to award RFP-RRDSB 2014-80 (Donald Young School Renovation Architectural Services) to LM Architecture.
The meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at Rainy River High School.
