Robert Moore School will be presented the “Recognition of Excellence” for its early-years “fall harvest” by the Rainy River District School Board at its regular meeting tonight.
The annual event, held Oct. 10, saw elders sharing their traditions and knowledge of preparing for winter with the school’s youngest learners.
“During the course of the celebration, students learned about the harvesting and preparation of wild rice, regalia, sacred medicines, drumming, the Seven Grandfather Teachings, making bannock, and beading,” notes the report to the board.
The children also heard the story of “Stone Soup,” a popular take that taught the students that if we all give a little, everyone benefits.
After the “fall harvest” activities were completed, all the participants gathered for a feast of stone soup, wild rice, bannock, and blueberries.
“The children watched as school staff presented the elders with a blanket representing thanks for their leadership in this important cultural event,” the report states.
It adds the school appreciates staff and community members who helped and supported this educational opportunity for the early-years students.

•hear a presentation about the “Reading Recovery” program;
