Rise in respiratory illness prompts Riverside Health to implement masking protocols

Riverside Health Care has implemented a mandatory mask policy at all its facilities as seasonal respiratory illnesses continue to rise.

The decision to increase protective measures came as Riverside and the Northwestern Public Health Unit declared an Influenza A outbreak in both the East and West Wings of Rainycrest Long Term Care Home.

“Effective immediately, enhanced protocols are now in effect across all Riverside facilities for the duration of the respiratory illness season,” Riverside said in a press release last week.

“As seasonal respiratory illnesses continue to rise, Riverside Health Care is taking additional steps to protect patients, residents, clients, staff, visitors and the broader community.”

The enhanced protocols will remain in effect across all Riverside facilities for the duration of the respiratory illness season, with masks available at all facility entrances.

“Keeping everyone safe remains our top priority,” Riverside said. “We will continue to closely monitor influenza and other seasonal respiratory illness activity and adjust our infection prevention and control measures as needed to support a safe care environment for everyone.”

Enhanced visitor restrictions and masking protocols are in place at Rainycrest, with only two visitors or caregivers permitted at any time and visitation restricted to one resident per visit. Visits may only take place in the residents’ rooms.

“Medical masking is required for all visitors at Rainycrest, and staff may require visitors to wear additional personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on the circumstances.”

Large group social activities for residents on the East and West Wings have been cancelled until further notice.

Riverside urged all visitors to conduct a self-screening before entering its facilities, with those experiencing flu-like symptoms asked to refrain from visiting.

“We understand that when outbreak protocols are implemented, particularly during the holiday season, these measures can be challenging for everyone. We sincerely thank you for your patience, understanding, and diligence in adhering to these requirements.”
