Rainy River District Stewardship working for future of the district

From the Rainy River District Stewardship
Press release

Founded in 2009, the mission of Rainy River District Stewardship (RRDS) (https://www.rrds.ca/) is to advance the responsible care of nature in the Rainy River District for benefits now and in the future. RRDS became a formal not-for-profit corporation in February of 2013.

The Stewardship is actively engaged in facilitating, developing, supporting, and administering local stewardship activities.

We define stewardship as “an ethic in which humans care for the land as part of the natural system. Environmental stewardship is about making a personal commitment to sustain and enhance ecosystems for future generations.”

Working with many local organizations and volunteers, Stewardship has delivered close to 50 environmental stewardship projects since being formed. This has encouraged and assisted landowners and others to be better stewards of the lands and waters in the Rainy River District,

Current projects include:

  • Annual Community Tree Sales of 10,000 trees
  • Fort Frances Tree App
  • Fort Frances Urban Tree Map – a guided tour of local trees
  • Library of Trees – our arboretum in progress
  • Library Native Flower Garden
  • Annual High School Bursary
  • Monarch Butterfly rearing and release

Notable past projects include:

  • School student Tree Plants
  • Rainy Lake Square Donation
  • Pine Marten Box Construction and Placement
  • Wild Food Workshop
  • Land Stewardship and the Farmer Workshop
  • Green Expositions
  • Trade show and other presentations
