The Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed seven new fires in the Northwest Region yesterday, with the forest fire hazard remaining “high” for most of the area.
The only active fires in Fort Frances District—four in Quetico Provincial Park that currently are listed as “being monitored”—received heavy amounts of rainfall and showed minimal signs of life yesterday, the MNR reported.
These fires will be able to fulfill their natural role in the environment, rejuvenating ecosystems and habitats.
There currently are 67 active fires across the Northwest Region, covering a total of 58,833.8 hectares.
Since April 1, there has been 461 fires, charring 60,415.6 ha in all.
Numerous fires burning in the Red Lake and Sioux Lookout districts, as well as large blazes in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, continue to cause smoke to be a concern.
Smoky conditions can be expected for most of Northwestern Ontario.
There currently is no Restricted Fire Zone in Northwestern Ontario. However, First Nation communities and municipalities may wish to impose their own restrictions on open-air fires.
