There have been no new fires in the region for the past few days, the Ministry of Natural Resources’ Northwest Region Forest Fire Management Centre reported late yesterday.
The fire hazard has dipped to “low” across the board, and more and more fires are being declared “out,” it added.
Sioux Lookout District Fire #20, located about 90 km northwest of Pickle Lake, was declared “out” yesterday at 47.7 hectares in size.
All crews have been released, and equipment retrieval by helicopter slinging was to be completed by yesterday afternoon.
Red Lake District Fire #27, located in the northern sector of the district, was declared “out” at 25.5 ha in size Wednesday evening.
There currently are 11 fires burning in the region, covering 562.2 ha in total.
These include Fort Frances Fire #14, a 0.1-ha blaze located on an island on the north arm of Rainy Lake.
This fire is being allowed to fulfill its natural role in the environment, but will be monitored by the Fort Frances Fire Management Headquarters.
There also are six fires burning in Sioux Lookout District, two in Red Lake District, and two in Nipigon District.
There have been 197 fires reported since the fire season officially began April 1, charring 1,426.2 ha in all.
