This year marks the 10th anniversary of “Project Safe Hallowe’en,” a partnership consisting of Kenora-Rainy River Districts Child and Family Services (CFS), OPP, Treaty #3 Police Service, Dryden City Police Service, and district school boards.
The community partnership has worked together to raise funds within each community to purchase one glow stick for each child from age three to Grade 8.
This year, the Rainy River District initiative has expanded regionally to include Dryden, Ignace, Kenora, Sioux Narrows, Sioux Lookout, and Red Lake.
As a result, project partners will ensure that children will receive their safety materials and glow sticks at their school tomorrow (Oct. 31) in anticipation of Hallowe’en night.
In years to come, the project will continue to mobilize additional communities within the region.
Parents and children are reminded of some simple safety tips for trick-or-treaters:
•Be visible—wear bright colours, reflective tape, and carry a flashlight or glow stick.
•If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
•Be respectful of people’s property.
•Don’t trick-or-treat alone—walk in a group or with a trusted adult.
•Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering. Do not eat candy until you get home.
•Stay in well-lit, familiar areas and neighbourhoods.
•Wear well-fitted, warm clothing. Avoid costumes with baggy sleeves and long hems to minimize the risk of contact with candles, getting caught on objects, and falls.
