Shortly after 11 a.m. last Wednesday (Nov. 13), members of the Rainy River District detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to the Canada Post office in Atikokan.
The Atikokan Fire Department, Rainy River District Emergency Response Service (EMS) were also called to attend.
Employees at the post office located an unknown white substance that they deemed as suspicious.
The post office and surrounding area were evacuated as a precaution.
Members of the Northwest Region Forensic Identification Services (NWR FIS) also attended as part of a tiered hazardous material HAZMAT response.
Samples of the substance were taken and deemed to be inert–that is, not a dangerous substance.
The post office was cleared to be opened shortly before 8 p.m. and was open for business the next day.
Members of the public are reminded that the police and other emergency services may be required to restrict access to areas that the public normally has unrestricted access.
This is done for the protection of the public and is only done if it is deemed necessary.
Break-ins
Meanwhile, shortly after 8 a.m. last Wednesday, members of the OPP were called to the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) for the report of a break and enter.
This is currently under investigation.

And shortly after 12 p.m. on Nov. 3, members of the OOPP were called to the Royal Canadian Legion in Atikokan for the report of a break and enter.
An investigation was conducted with the assistance of a Scenes of Crime Officer and evidence collected has been sent to the Centre of Forensic Science.
As a resulted, an adult male was arrested yesterday in this incident and charged with break and enter with intent to commit a criminal offence.
