The Rainy River District OPP is reminding residents to be aware of a scam.
It involves someone claiming to be a representative from the Canada Revenue Agency, who calls to say you owe the government money and that payment has to be made immediately.
The OPP would like to provide some additional information to better equip district residents to identify those communications that do not come from the CRA.
The CRA will not:
•request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by e-mail;
•divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer; and
•leave any personal information or threatening messages on an answering machine.
Meanwhile, the Treaty #3 Police Service is warning district residents of another scam.
People are being contacted by someone telling them they have won $5.5 million, and also a car, for paying their utilities bill on time.
To qualify, the caller asks would-be victims to forward money through a money order before he attends their residence.
Police are urging anyone contacted by this person asking for money or personal information for a prize not to do so.
