Pole-walk workshop coming to Emo

Dave Ogilvie

The Emo-La Vallee-Chapple Healthy Communities Coalition is happy to present a free workshop, “Watch Out—Women Walking: Learn to Pole-Walk,” for women aged 55 and older.
It is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9:30 a.m.-noon at the Emo Legion, with a free lunch to follow.
Participants will learn from a certified instructor how to use walking poles, and will have the chance to practice their new-found skills on a walk.
Poles will be provided for everyone to try, with an opportunity to purchase their own if desired.
Pole-walking is a simple and enjoyable activity that provides an upper body workout while you are walking, as well as increased balance and stability.
Organizers also are hoping to form a women’s walking group (with or without poles) if there is interest.
To register for this activity or for more information, call the Northwestern Health Unit at 482-2211. Be sure to wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and walking shoes.
The coalition extends its thanks to the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity for providing the grant which makes this workshop possible.
It also wants to remind everyone of the fresh produce in the community garden which is now available to pick. Kale, beets, onions, potatoes, carrots, bean, tomatoes, and a number of herbs are now ready while the turnips are coming along nicely.
The garden is located on the west side of Emo, across the highway from Norlund’s Chapel.
Everyone is welcome to help themselves.
