About 60 snowmobilers participated in the Emo Borderland Snowmobile Club’s annual poker derby last Saturday, Jan. 23.
The route went from Emo to Barwick to Stratton and back, with riders getting their final card at the Emo Arena.
Ross Anderson had the top poker hand to win $292.50, with Lyndon Brown finishing second ($175.50) and Jim Strachan third ($117).
The next 14 finishers took home merchandise prizes ranging from cooler bags to sweatshirts, T-shirts, and hats.
Ruth Alberts and Scott Mosbeck were the lucky winners of the two Emo Borderland Snowmobile Club sweatshirts that were raffled off later Saturday evening.
One organizer said the trail conditions were considered fair considering what little snow cover has been received of late. But several inches of water at the mouth of Sturgeon Creek made things a little wet for riders travelling to Stratton.
The club hopes that by continuing to raise funds, it will be able to match the money allotted from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund to build the bridge over Sturgeon Creek.
This will allow snowmobilers to travel by land right from Emo to Rainy River.
