Plenty for kids to do on break

Staff

While some people might be headed to a tropical destination for March Break, others will remain in Fort Frances.
But plenty of activities are planned to keep youngsters busy throughout the week.
The Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre has organized a “March Break Extravaganza,” with a different activity scheduled for each day.
On Monday, they will offer a family movie—“Walking with the Dinosaurs” (PG/87 min.)—at 2 p.m.
Then on Tuesday, there will be an arm-knitting workshop for children aged seven and up from 2-3 p.m.
Participants should register in advance and bring their own yarn (and arms).
On Wednesday, all ages are welcome to join in a Turtle Piggy Bank craft from 2-4 p.m. (please register in advance).
The library also will offer a movie for teens—called “The Book Thief” (PG 13/131 min.)—at 5:30 p.m.
Then on Friday, families are encouraged to drop in anytime from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. for Wii and board games.
There also will be Bingo at 2 p.m.
Parents are reminded that space is limited and early registration is required for the crafts.
You can call the library or register online.
Parents/caregivers must remain with children 10 years and younger.
Meanwhile, the Rainy River District OPP and Treaty #3 Police Service, in conjunction with the local Community Policing Committee, are hosting an open skate for youth and their parents on Monday.
It will take place from 12:15-1:15 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena, and there is no cost to attend.
This event is an open skate, so no sticks or pucks will be permitted.
As well, helmets are mandatory for those aged 13 and under.
Then on Tursday, an egg-decorating workshop is being held from 1-3 p.m. upstairs at the Fort Frances Museum.
Admission is a toonie per child. Call the museum to register.
The March Break fun will wrap up next Saturday (March 15) with “Snoasis 2” hosted by the Fort Frances Museum.
This will include a toonie skate at the Memorial Sports Centre from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with “Snoasis” activities at the Lions Park and Fort Frances Public Library from noon-2 p.m.
There will be cross-country skiing, face-painting, ice bowling, smoosh boarding, and snowshoeing.
As well, people are encouraged to freeze water in two-litre cartons and bring their ice “brick” to help build a fort.
Free hotdogs, hot chocolate, and cookies will be provided (while supplies last).
Finally, there will be a toonie swim at the Memorial Sports Centre from 1-3 p.m. and “Storytime” at the library from 2-3 p.m.
