Plane crashes on Lake Despair

A pilot escaped serious injury Friday morning when a Piper Cub float plane crashed after landing on Lake Despair, north of Devlin, Emo OPP reported.
Kristopher Esselink, 21, of Emo was able to free himself from the cockpit and hold on to the partially-submerged aircraft until rescuers from nearby cabins arrived, police said.
Esselink was taken to La Verendrye hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released, police added.
The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. when the aircraft made a hard landing on the water, resulting in the plane stopping suddenly and the flipping over, police said.
Lake Despair is located around 50 km northwest of Fort Frances.
