The Fort Frances Power Corp. is warning of a phone scam some of its customers have reported here.
The scam involves a caller posing as a utility official who threatens to cut off electricity to residents if they don’t immediately make payment through a money wire transfer or pre-paid credit cards.
This scam has been active throughout Ontario in recent months, and now appears to be targeting customers here.
“We have received several calls from customers that were targeted in this scam,” noted FFPC CEO and president Joerg Ruppenstein.
“FFPC would never make phone calls from a 1-800 number or ask for payment via pre-paid credit cards or wire transfers,” he stressed.
The calls will show up as a 1-800 number.
In some cases, personal bank account or credit card information has been requested.
There also have been reports of similar scams taking place via e-mail or text messaging.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately.
If you have any questions about your FFPC account, call 274-9291.
The public can report the scam to the police or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or via e-mail at info@antifraudcentre.ca
