We are going to take a break from featuring a “Pet of the Week” this week to tell you a bit about “Best for Kitty”. We are an emergency rescue for cats and kittens in the Rainy River District and began operation at the end of October, 2020. Since our inception we have brought 36 cats or kittens into our care. Of those 36, 25 have found loving permanent homes, eight remain in foster care, and sadly, three had such serious medical conditions that they had to be humanely euthanized. We have been very involved in cleaning up the infamous cat colony in Rainy River, thanks largely to the efforts of two volunteers in that community.
We survive entirely through donations. Running a rescue is expensive. From the time a cat comes into our care, it can cost anywhere from $200 to $500 to get the animal fully vetted, spayed or neutered and ready for adoption. We are always willing to accept donations and while food, litter etc. is appreciated, cash is by far the most useful commodity as vet bills are a constant issue for the rescue.
We want to use this opportunity to appeal to those living in the “west end” of the district. While we are a “district” rescue, serving Mine Centre to Rainy River, we have been surprised at the disproportionate number of animals coming into care from the west end. Of the 36 cats mentioned above, 21 of those have come from the town of Rainy River and 31 have come from areas west of Emo. While 16 of those cats have come from the cat colony in Rainy River, the numbers clearly indicate a serious issue. Sadly, donations from that area have been slow and we are hoping that the citizens of the west end in general, and Rainy River in particular, will consider a donation as many of you have told us how much you appreciate the work that has been done to clean up the cat colony. Spring is known to be “kitten season” and we expect we may be facing an influx of animals in the near future.
