There are 16 “peer mediators” at Donald Young School this year and as a result of the students being self-motivated, independent, and reliable, the program has proven very successful.
Mediators this year include J.J. Hunsperger, Amy Nielson, Allison Loney, Gordie Matheson, Maverick Judson, Kazia Nault, Nicole Simmons, Jamie DeGagne, Rosalie Loney, Danny Lalonde, Doug Veldhuisen, Brittany Jackson, Daniel Veldhuisen, Ashley Bombay, Rachel Hettinga, and Van Paul Allan.
Together, the group has mediated 17 disputes during during about 40 school days. They report that just by being visible on the playground, they’ve notice some behaviour changes.
For instance, the students are remembering the “no hands” rule.
“Peer mediation has made a tremendous different at DYS,” noted teacher C. Gustafson.
Meanwhile, the DYS school council suggested at its Jan. 23 meeting that a resource pool be established of parents and community members who are interested in providing tutoring services or volunteering their talents for the benefit of students.
Presently, a parent is working with students weekly at noon to create a photo album documenting last season’s events. Other suggestions included first aid and sports activities.
The next school council meeting is slated Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 7-9 p.m.
In other news, the recent sale of cheese and/or cookie dough claimed a profit of $1,026.
Upcoming dates to remember at DYS include Feb. 16 (P.D. Day), Feb. 21 (dress like the opposite gender day), and March 6 (portfolio celebration and science displays).
