Park checking ice, trails

Voyageurs National Park has begun checking lake ice conditions. At this time, ice travel is not recommended on any lake surface due to inadequate ice thickness and open water areas.
An overflight was conducted Monday by park staff to determine current ice conditions. Open water exists on Rainy Lake from the east end of Dryweed Island to Virgin Island, located near the east end of Rainy Lake.
In addition, open water exists on Namakan Lake from the east end of Namakan Island to the east end of Namakan Lake.
Kabetogama, Sand Point, and Crane Lake surfaces are frozen with thin ice conditions. Thin ice conditions also have been found within 300 yards of the shoreline on Black Bay.
Regular weekly trail reports will be available beginning today (Dec. 8). Reports also will be posted on the park’s website.
