Dietitian Jodis McCaine and Cindy Gauthier, RN, visited the Wheels to Meals program at the Emo Legion last Thursday to talk to the seniors about high blood pressure and its cause.
Several factors can be to blame for this disease—being overweight, stress, family history, being physically inactive, smoking, excessive sodium intake, and excessive alcohol intake.
Those on hand were urged to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. The were told to eat the proper foods, such as vegetables and fruit (about five-10 servings every day), and exercise—even a short distance helps.
The group also was advised not to eat junk food, which contains much salt, as well as to read the labels when buying canned goods to see what they contain.
They also were told to talk to their doctor about herbs, especially if they already were on medication.
Each senior had their blood pressure taken, and all of us were normal.
