OPP offers Hallowe’en safety tips

From the OPP

As Hallowe’en approaches, the streets soon will be filled with hundreds of young ghosts and goblins.
Parents and children are reminded of some simple safety tips for trick-or-treaters:

•Be visible by wearing bright colours, using reflective tape, and carrying a flashlight or glow stick.
•If there is not a sidewalk present, walk facing traffic.
•Be respectful of people’s property.
•Don’t trick-or-treat alone; walk in a group or with a trusted adult.
•Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering (do not eat candy until you get home).
•Stay in well-lit, familiar areas and neighbourhoods.
•Avoid costumes with baggy sleeves and long hems to minimize the risk of contact with candles, getting caught on objects, and falls.
•Wear make-up instead of a mask (if you do wear a mask, make sure you can see, hear, and breathe well in it).
•Stay on one side of the road and then the other (do not cross back and forth over the roadway).
•NEVER enter a stranger’s home—stay outside on the porch or steps.

Have fun and stay safe!
