No new fires were reported in the West Fire Region over the weekend, but Sioux Lookout District was checking out a smoke report.
Although rain is in the forecast, there could be some fire activity today in advance of stormy weather with “moderate” to “high” fire hazards in the region, along with high winds.
Any source of ignition under these conditions means fire could spread quickly.
There currently are 16 active fires in the region, including one in Fort Frances District, one in Kenora District, 12 in Nipigon District, and two in Red Lake District.
These are covering 5497.3 hectares.
There’s been 169 fires to date, having consumed 13665.8 ha in all.
Two active fires of note are Fort Frances Fire #16, at Quetico Provincial Park, and Kenora Fire #20, which are receiving a monitored fire response.
The fires occurred in areas, identified under fire management plans, where fire will be allowed to play its natural role in the forest ecosystem.
Forest fires that occur in these areas play an essential role in forest health and sustainability, and pose no threat of personal injury, value loss, or social disruption.
Regardless of the fire hazard, remember to keep your fire small, never leave it unattended, and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the site.
