No new fires were reported in the West Fire Region as of yesterday evening.
However, 10 active fires remain in the region, with several unconfirmed fires coming in at the time of this report.
Two fires continue to burn here in Fort Frances District, along with one in Kenora District, four in Thunder Bay District, and three in Sioux Lookout District, two of which are of considerable size.
Sioux Lookout Fire #38, sized at 1,200 hectares, and is located 20 km north-northeast of Weagamow Lake.
The fire currently is being monitored as there are no values threatened and the fire is limited by a water system to the west.
Meanwhile, Sioux Lookout Fire #35 is about 30 km east of Pickle Lake and the First Nation community of Mishkeegogamang.
It grew to 17,500 ha over the weekend.
Fire suppression efforts, with burn-out operations for the removal of ignition fuels, were conducted to constrict the fire to its natural boundaries, focusing on key areas in the west side of the fire perimeter.
Fire managers presently are assessing values in the area to provide information for the basis of a protection and suppression tactical plan, with support and resources being assigned to the fire.
There is some concern the fire may spread eastward towards Mishkeegogamang and Pickle Lake with forecast northeasterly winds over the next few days.
No smoke issues have been reported in these neighbouring communities at this time.
In other news, all remaining Ontario staff in Alberta are scheduled to return home by Friday.
