The number of families has dropped in most Rainy River District communities over the past five years, including here in Fort Frances.
In Fort Frances, there were 2,260 total families according to 2011 census figures released last week, which was down from 2,320 reported in 2006.
The average number of children at home was 1.7—a slight drop from the 1.8 in 2006.
The number of married couples with no children at home fell to 805 from 840 between 2006 and 2011 but still exceeded the number of married couples with children at home, which dropped to 710 from 780 five years earlier.
Meanwhile, the number of common-law couples with no children at home rose in Fort Frances—jumping to 160 in 2011 from 125 in 2006.
Common-law couples with children at home fell to 145 from 150 in 2006.
As well, families headed by a lone female parent also jumped here—totalling 330 in 2011 compared to 310 in 2006.
Families headed by a lone male parent remained the same at 105.
And more people were living alone in Fort Frances compared to five years ago—rising to 1,200 from 1,115.
In Rainy River, the total number of families recorded in the 2011 census was 225, which was down from 250 in 2006.
But the average number of children at home was 1.8—up from 1.6 in 2006.
Again, families with no children at home (95) exceeded those with children at home (55).
Common-law couples with no children at home rose to 15 last year compared to 10 in 2006 while common-law couples with children dropped to 25 from 30.
Families headed by a lone female parent fell to 25 from 35 but the number of families headed by a lone male parent increased to five from zero in 2006.
The number of people living alone in Rainy River rose to 160 last year from 140 five years ago.
Atikokan saw the steepest drop in the number of total families over the past five years, falling to 835 from 940.
The average number of children at home stayed at 1.7.
The number of married couples with no children at home rose to 350 from 340 while the number of married couples with children at home plunged from 335 in 2006 to 240 last year.
The number of common-law couples with no children at home fell to 75 from 85 while the number of common-law couples with children at home dropped to 65 from 70 five years earlier.
