Morley council closer to full complement

Ken Haw officially has been sworn in as the fourth council member for Morley Township–and a fifth and final member also has indicated he will sign on.
“Somebody had to do it and I thought I’d be an asset,” said Haw, a cattle farmer who has lived in Rainy River District all his life.
“I don’t think there’s any problems. I just want to maintain things the way they are,” said Haw, adding a big task will be preparations for Morley’s centennial celebration in 2003.
Morley remains the only municipality in the district yet to fill its council seats. Haw was sworn in during the council’s first meeting of the year Jan. 10, with a fifth member expected to be sworn in Jan. 24.
“I believe we have all the positions filled. We approved one person at our first January meeting and we have found another one,” said Morley Reeve Gary Gamsby.
Reeve Gamsby and Couns. Bill Romyn and George Heyens have been searching for two other councillors since nominations first closed in October prior to the Nov. 13 municipal election.
“We went through the process of advertising for people who were interested and we didn’t get any,” Reeve Gamsby explained.
But with a full slate of members sitting by next week, Morley council will be able to begin tackling its agenda for the three-year term.
“We’re going to have our centennial in 2003 and although we’ll have our centennial committee, council will still be quite involved in it and we’re looking at things to spruce up our facilities for that time,” said Reeve Gamsby.
Morley council also is set to begin the budget process. Reeve Gamsby said despite levy increases from other organizations, he does not anticipate any tax hike in Morley in 2001.
