More candidates vying for nominations

Two more candidates have stepped forward to run for their respective party nominations in the new Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding.
Christine Hogarth has joined David Leskowski in the race to represent the new Conservative party here in the next federal election while John Rafferty announced Monday he will vie for the NDP nod against former Fort Frances councillor Larry Richardson.
Hogarth is the treasurer for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, and has been a special assistant to a number of Tory ministers at Queen’s Park.
Leskowski, who announced his intention to seek the nomination last week, is co-chair of the constitution committee on the federal Conservative Party’s interim council, which is responsible for running the party until its first leader is elected this Saturday (March 20).
Rafferty carried the NDP banner in the Thunder Bay-Superior North riding in the 2000 federal election, where he came in third with 19.5 percent of the vote.
He ran again in the provincial election last fall, where he lost to Liberal Bill Mauro. He garnered 21.6 percent of the popular vote.
Richardson served eight years on town council here in the 1960s and twice ran twice for a seat in the provincial legislature.
The Conservatives will announce their candidate March 27. The NDP have not yet set a nomination date, but expect to hold three meetings across the riding in mid-April.
