Six new fires were reported in the Northwest Region over the weekend, occurring in the Red Lake, Dryden, Nipigon, and Sioux Lookout Districts.
Through the quick response and determined action of forest firefighters, all the blazes were contained to sizes of less than 1.5 hectares.
The new fires were caused by both lightning and human activity.
This shows the forest is susceptible to wildfire and that the potential for new fire starts is high.
Despite overcast conditions yesterday, the forest fire hazard continues to rise in the region as sunny skies and high temperatures are forecast for the next few days.
The forest fire hazard is currently “high” across Northwestern Ontario.
As well, large fires burning in northern Manitoba and the United States are producing smoke that is expected to drift into Northwestern Ontario over the next few days.
Under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, day burning of brush and grass fires is prohibited. Such fires are to be lit no sooner than two hours before sunset and be out no later than two hours after sunrise.
Campfires are allowed for cooking and warmth, but must be attended at all times and be put dead out before leaving.
If you live within an organized municipality, check with your municipal office before burning.
